Watts Cemetery Chapel

March 28, 2024|WATTS CEMETERY CHAPEL

The community of a British village helped the artist Mary Watts create one of the most remarkable experimental wall paintings in Europe

Watts Cemetery Chapel is a breathtaking work of art born from the unique vision of Victorian artist Mary Watts. The local community of the village of Compton worked with Watts on creating the chapel, and Watts taught them the necessary craft skills in her workshop nearby. The chapel sits within a gently sloping hillside cemetery, also laid out by Watts. The terracotta exterior of the chapel is a heady mix of styles and influences, including Celtic, Romanesque and Art Nouveau. Inside, the sense of freedom of expression continues in a riot of rich and earthy colours. Opening in 1898, Watts Cemetery Chapel is still today a place of worship and is part of the Watt’s Gallery Artists Village.
