Explore Christopher Lloyd’s masterpiece, a beacon for horticulturalists from across the world

Great Dixter was the home of prolific gardening writer Christopher Lloyd, whose passion for gardens fuelled 40 years of articles and books. Today, the house and garden are owned and operated by a charitable trust along with Fergus Garrett, Lloyd’s friend and head gardener. Together they have created a centre of education for horticulturists, keen to learn from Lloyd’s legacy.

The garden at Great Dixter fuses the natural and the cultivated with an awareness of time’s influence. The majority of the garden was designed by celebrated Edwardian architect Edwin Lutyens, who sought to adapt traditional architectural styles to the requirements of his era.

Spending an afternoon exploring the paths that wind through the garden and its many rooms is an immersive experience. Great Dixter today exudes a beauty that only careful maintenance and time can produce. The synthesis of passion for the garden’s design and its marriage with nature places Great Dixter among the most remarkable gardens in the world.
